Adding Master Pages to WSS v3 Site Collections via Features

Developers and designers can use Office SharePoint Designer (SPD) 2007 to create new master pages and save them to a Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) v3 Web site. The only downside to doing this is that the source of the master page is stored in the WSS v3 site's content database and can't be easily used by other WSS v3 sites on the same Web Front End (WFE) server. Instead, you can customize the master pages that reside on the file system so the changes take effect across all sites on the WFE. Great... but how do you get the site to see the new master page on the file system?

My good friend Heather Solomon has posted a great article explaining how you can use a SharePoint Feature to provision new master pages to sites by simply activating the Feature... very slick!

Hello,

I read this great article, but unfortunately I can't apply it with only WSSv3. I don't have the feature PublishingLayouts.

Is there any alternative solutions to make work this feature with only WSS and not MOOS ?
