Back in October of last year, I posted an article the documented how to setup a Publishing site with two authentication paths: one being Windows Auth and not anonymous, the other with Forms Based Authentication. Been quite a popular post... with 91 comments since October 21, 2006!

» HOWTO: Configuring a Office SharePoint Server 2007 Publishing Site with Dual Authentication Providers and Anonymous Access

Aside from quite a few "it doesn't work" comments that were usually resolved from a typo in a web.config, by far the most popular question was about My Sites and how FBA "breaks" My Sites. Thankfully this isn't the case and the "break" is not a bug or problem after all. The "issue" is that My Sites require profiles and a Shared Service Provider (SSP). I'd been meaning to go back and write a follow up to that post on how you setup My Sites with it, but alas, where's the time!

Thankfully Dan Attis has written a fantastic post on how to do just this. In Part 2 of his two-part FBA article, he documents how to set it up. Makes a great add-on to my original post!

Gravatar Not to spoil the party, but isn't there some licensing roadblock with SharePoint sites that face both internally and externally?? (i.e. I think you need separate licenses/installations for each)

I intentionally didn't address licensing at all, I'm strictly talking about what's possible. Licensing is a mess of a discussion in and of itself.

Gravatar i am wondering about Oli's point. I'd like to offer a My Site to a subset of registered users but am not sure if this is going to be in violation of the licensing.

Speculation is welcome!

Gravatar AC,
I have aFBA situation that I was wondering if you have every seen. After following the process on your site, MSDN, and others we have setup a dual authentication site with FBA and windows auth. Everythign seems fine, however *all* my FBA users seem to have read only access to all the sites in the collection. When I look at the site permissions only my admin FBA user is listed. When I look at the policy for web application in CA, the only users listed are a couple windows users, and my FBA admin user. Any idea why this is happening?

Gravatar Please ignore my previous post... the issue stemed from initially setting up the webapp on a different port than 80 and not having the host header forward it to the FBA port app. A assumption made was that anonymous access in sharepoint was setting IIS access, and giving fba users access to view the login page.

Thanks
Jonathan

Gravatar If I use web sso Authentication ,How can I enable My Sites

Gravatar Sarawoot-
I'm not 100% certain as I haven't worked much with SSO, but what's needed for My Sites is a profile for each user. Might want to try the setup/admin MSDN forum (there are links on my WCM linkfest).

Why are you asking for my email address?
The only reason I'm asking for your email address, which isn't required to submit a comment, is to provide a gravatar if you've created an account for yourself and associated your email address with a small image.
