People that know me know that this is one hell of a crazy move on my part. So what was it? I semi-retired my Dell D820 in favor of a brand new Apple MacBook Pro (MBP) in early December. Now, before you think this is some super radical move, know that I'm running Vista 99% of the time. Still tinkering around in Leopard but need to learn more... hello Mac101.

Why did I do it? Because it is the best damn reasonably portable laptop on the market. I got a 15" right after they released updated specs (Intel's 2.6Ghz Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo, 200GB 72000 RPM). Saved a few bucks upgrading to 4GB myself. I looked at a few other laptop options... what wanted was a machine that was more powerful than my Dell, a better screen (the MBP has a LED-lit screen... talk about bright... I usually only have it at 60-70% brightness when indoors) and weighed less. The 15" MBP is thinner, lighter (less than 5.5lbs!) and better built... no plastic stressing when this thing is built in a lightweight aluminum case. The rest of the specs rock... 800Mhz frontside bus, NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT 256MB, FireWire 800 with the super fast 800Mbps for faster virtual machines (USB2 only goes up to 480Mbps)... all resulting in a beautiful 5.1 Vista Experience Index!

At first I was real hesitant to do make the move. They keyboard was a bit different in that there is no delete or insert key (you hit FN+ENTER for insert, Apple's delete key is like the PC backspace, but FN+delete acts like a PC delete) and the lower-left corner keys are in a different order (FN - CTRL - ALT/OPTION - Apple/Windows), but the latter is more like a Toshiba yet easier to get used to. What about that whole no 2nd mouse button? No problem at all... my Microsoft Wireless Presenter Mouse 8000 paired up just fine, and even when I'm not using it a right click is as easy as placing two fingers on the touchpad and then clicking. But after checking out Dustin's and Heather's in Vegas during SharePoint Connections, I realize they would not be issues at all so I placed my order.

I've been using it now for over a month, presented once and taught three classes. Now feeling comfortable, I finally can come out of the closet. :) There are a few things I like so much more. First, setting up Vista was incredibly easy! Just run the Boot Camp assistant, tell it to split the partition, reboot into the Vista DVD, install, followed up by installing the Leopard drivers for the keyboard (modifying the screen brightness, sound, DVD eject key, the backlit keyboard and the built-in iSight camera. Amazingly I was up and running in 17 minutes! People told me the battery life sucked... not my experience. I got a 2nd battery just for those long flights (which is nice and small, like everything else with this laptop). The other thing I love about it is the A/C adapter... compared to other laptops I've had its tiny which is great for someone who travels.

Of course there are a few things I don't like. Wish there was a docking station that Apple offered (there is a 3rd party option but it takes up a ton of room on your desk). Also don't like that the FireWire, network, and monitor output is all on the right side so you need a little room on the desk if presenting  if you're using an external mouse. But seriously, that's it as these are admittedly minor gripes!

This is by far the best laptop I've ever owned and I absolutely love it... zero regrets! Consider the Apple MBP if you're looking for a new powerful yet portable machine.

Gravatar Welcome to the dark side AC, I've been using a MBP for my Windows development for nearly 6 months.

I'd suggest that you look into VMWare Fusion, I've found that virtual machines are a really good way to do Windows development on a Mac. I can easily have multiple machines ready to go at a click.

I'm sure you use VM's quite a lot in your line of work and I've found VMWare to be the best development virtualisation plateform.

And Fusion lets you have all the best of OS X and Windows all in one streamlined package.

Gravatar "potable"!!! - While I bet it would taste like a nice micro brew, I think drinking the laptop breaks the AppleCare warranty :J

Gravatar oh Andrew....Just when I thought we could trust you.... :)

Seriously though, that is a very nice box. I work with several macheads who run this kind of setup as well (living in both worlds) and are quite happy. You might want to look into the offerings of Parallels and VMWare to complement BootCamp. Parallels runs Vista (or any other operating system like server 2003) virtualized right on top of OS, and can even hook up to an existing bootcamp partition. this way, you can use bootcamp when you need 100% of the machine dedicated to Windwos, like for gaming, and you can use that same partition in Parallels when you want access to both at the same time and a performance hit is not an issue.

I've seen the vm integration they worked out, and it is quite slick. esentially, the windows start menu appears on the bottom of the Mac OS, and apps running in either mode overlap and co-exist seamlessly as separate windows. Pretty cool.

As for your gripes, I could not agree more. Lots of laptop makers are putting ports such as USB and video on the side instead of on the back, which i think is crazy. If you are going to do that to me, give me a dock connector.

BTW, I replaced my aging dell latitude 800 with a latitude 630, and I really am impressed.. It is MUCH smaller machine than the new 830s with identical specs. If you are ever looking for a powerful, but smaller windows box, I'd give a look at the 630.

Man... amazing how a missing 'R' can get people riled up :)

All-
While aware that I can boot a physical partition using Fusion, I just don't see a need for that... would rather stay in Vista most of the time right now. I use VMWare Workstation in Vista. I have Fusion as well, but just don't run Mac that often as I am not nearly as proficient as I am in Vista. I don't care for Parallels... better to have VMs that run in everything.

Gravatar I to have converted, but I am using the 17in model with 1920x1200 resolutions. If only Vista would recognize the other 1gb of the 4gb I have registered, I would be completely happy. For now I will settle with owning the best laptop I have ever had.

Gravatar Hey Now AC,
Nice Post. 5.1 says alot. The ibook is so easy to create a DVD of home flix too. Seems like you plug the cam in & out pops the DVD.
Thx 4 the info,

Where did you pick up your MBP? Apple? MacMall? I am trying to decide where is the best place to purchase is.

Gravatar AC,

When we last corresponded in December and you threw out that you had bought a Mac, I stopped reading and thought someone had taken over your PC and was impersonating my dear colleague! However, the truth has come to light now. I think I can adapt to this news now though. Coming from a former Apple nut back in the 80's, I can accept your crossover. I just wish I had quizzed you more at the time. I broke down and purchased a pimp-out Acer laptop over the holidays. The price was too good to pass up.

Gravatar Jeff-
First moving to a SharePoint MVP and now a MBP? I see you see the light :)

Catto-
First I need to figure out how to get around the Mac OS. :) I've created a movie, but I can't even find the damn thing! Nothing wrong with the OS, I'm just back to being a noob!

JohnO-
I ordered mine from Apple. At the time the Apple store told me they couldn't get the 2.6Ghz CPU in for a few months and it would be an online only offering.

Wayne-
You shoulda considered the MBP! It ROCKS!

Benn developing SharePoint on my MBP for over a year now. Still love it!

Gravatar Hello Andrew,

I was wondering how you found the 1440x900 resolution? I thought it would be a bit low for using VMs?

# re: I did something crazy a little over a month ago... and I love it! 2/1/2008 10:20 PM AC [MVP MOSS]
Gravatar Mark-
Love it... much better on the eyes. I found the 19## x ### resolutions cause bad eye strain and gave me headaches frequently.

Gravatar Thanks Andrew,

I was trying to decide between 1680x1050 and the 1440x900, you can get the nice LED backlit 1440s but I thought it might be better to have the screen real estate for VM work.

I think I'll go ansd see one in the flesh :)
