OK, so technically it isn’t the official name, but we’re finally seeing some semblence of a name. As seasoned SharePoint developers know, you do a lot of work inside this nested location on the file system. In the two most current versions of SharePoint it was:

  • SharePoint 2007 – c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12
  • SharePoint 2010 – c:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14

We all called it by various names. Some called them the ‘12 Hive’ or ‘14 Hive’ (which I never liked or understood since it had absolutely nothing to do with the registry). Now we’re seeing a real name for it in a few places: the SharePoint Root.

Personally I love this new tag… now we just say we’re referring to the SharePoint 2007 Root and most know exactly what we mean. Nice!

Gravatar I prefer 14 Hive, or Root. Too many SharePoint in SharePoint products. In next two years we will be spiting that word.

SharePoint Server,
SharePoint Search,
SharePoint Foundation,
SharePoint Root,
SharePoint VS Tools
SharePoint Designer
SharePoint Workspace
etc.

let’s do smth truly nice and change name from SharePoint Root to Root or Hive. Everyone that works with SPS knows what hive mean. Therefore why we should change that name?

Gravatar Agreed on new tag, I've always hated calling it "The Hive"

Gravatar I thought the same about the 12 "Hive" when I first started working with SharePoint. I went straight to the registry when I was first told it was in the 12 "Hive" I like SharePoint Root much better.

Enjoyed your seesions and post conference talks at DevConnections!

Hit em Straight

Gravatar Just to be a smarta$$. Technically it is not the root of SharePoint either, more like a leaf, like the web app folders and the Office Server folder :)

Why does installation folder not work for us all. Like the folder where you install SharePoint? I just don't get it I am sure.

# re: SharePoint 2010 Dev TidBit – How was the client object model built? 12/2/2009 9:56 AM Chris Pettigrew
Gravatar If they are auto generated why does the silverlight client object model not have any authenticationmode properties to enable anonymous access with a silverlight application? When trying to create a simple news ticker which reads from a sharepoint 2010 list when logged in as a user it works fine but with anonymous access enabled no data is returned and i get an access denied error when using fiddler? Any idea? Thanks Andrew :)

Gravatar Hi Andrew. this method does not exist in the Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.Silverlight.dll it only appears in the
Microsoft.SharePoint.Client.dll.

Therefore you are unable to set anonymous authentication on the clientContext object from within silverlight. Are you aware of any workaround to this ? Thank you for your quick reply :) hope the teaching is going well.

I was a little off in my post... the SL control will use the same permissions as the user that logged into the site when they launched the SL application.
