With the release of SharePoint Server 2010 beta 2, everyone wants to create their own virtual machine. However between a few hotfixes and other stuff, it may not be the most straightforward process. We at Critical Path Training have created a complete setup guide that helps you get your own environment setup. It includes the following:

  • Setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 OS*
  • Setting up Active Directory & DNS
  • Setting up SQL Server 2008*
  • Setting up & configuring SharePoint Server 2010 Beta 2
  • Setting up & configuring Office 2010 Pro Plus Beta 2
  • Setting up & configuring Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2

Our guide walks you though each step in a ton of detail complete with screenshots along the way. Like I said, there’s tons of detail… over 40pgs worth of helpful instructions! You don’t even need licenses for things like Windows Server 2008 or SQL Server… we show you where to get the trial / evaluation editions of these products. Of course, you’re free to use your own keys and if you like.

This guide is provided for free from the members only section of our site. Login (or first create your free account) at www.CriticalPathTraining.com & click on the Members link in the primary navigation (it isn’t there when you aren’t logged in). From there you can access all our members-only content including this document (located under the articles section titled SharePoint Server Beta 2 Virtual Machine Setup Guide).

Gravatar Is there also a direct link to the article that can be accessed by people who have not registered, and then if they register the article will appear?

I need that sort of link before I can add this to the WSS v4 FAQ's Articles section (where it would be listed with a "needs registration" addition after the title).

Gravatar Actually I'm not being redirected; it's just giving me a 403 Forbidden error.

Gravatar Mike-
No... you need to login to be able to see the document. If anything, people can go to the members only download section (http://www.criticalpathtraining.com/Members)... but a direct link is not available.

Gravatar Hey AC,

A great document. I ran through the steps and everything ran great to the point where I am trying to create the configuration DB and the central admin site using the Products and Technologies Configuration Wizard. I have entered all the information for creating the database configuration and I get the following error:

An error has occurred while validating the configuration settings. An exception of type System.ArgumentNullException was thrown. Additional exception information: The errorData argument cannot be null or zero length. Parameter name: errorData

Any ideas...

All Comments Are Filtered & Moderated
Unfortunately comment spammers are just too effecient and are constantly dirtying up blogs with irrelevant and unwanted comments trying to improve their standing on search engines. All comments on this blog are moderated. I do not censor comments, but I don't approve comments with vulger language or those soliciting products. Most of the time comments are approved within a few hours of being submitted with the only exception when I'm traveling.

Why are you asking for my email address?
The only reason I'm asking for your email address, which isn't required to submit a comment, is to provide a gravatar if you've created an account for yourself and associated your email address with a small image. If you have a gravatar created for the email address you submit, it will appear next to your comment. Otherwise nothing will appear.

What is a gravatar?
A gravatar is a "globally recognized avatar." You can get more information about gravatars, as well as create your own for free, at www.gravatar.com. You can also view my gravatar here.
