SharePoint 2010 – Starter Taxonomies Now Available

Ryan Duguid from Microsoft recently posted on the ECM Team Blog that Microsoft recently teamed up with WAND to make their General Business Taxonomy available as a free download. Very cool for those looking to get started with taxonomies!

Also check out additional taxonomies from WAND (these aren’t free) in the areas of Products & Services, Local Search, Enterprise, Jobs, Travel, Medical, Lifecycle, Finance and Records Retention.

Use API or browser to create your terms in managed metadata. Out of the box CSV import will create corrupted terms. Check em out in SharePoint Manager and look at the properties. The format is "label|guid|... you'll see "|guid". Won't be a problem until you hit those items with the content organizer.... in their final destination they become un-indexable with a "index outside the bounds of the array error".

I'll put a link to a C# console app we created to deal with this issue and it can use the same CSV file you'd like to import. Just trying to save some cycles > I have 30K documents and nearly as many terms that use managed metadata from a CSV import created term set that were moved with the content organizer that can't be indexed and no easy fix on the horizon. I don't think people have pushed MMD that hard yet to find this stuff out.
