The following list contains an index of the major build and version numbers for a few Microsoft products. This list is primarily for the Office Server System (OSS) developer so it doesn't cover all Microsoft products. It's a work in progress... if you would like to contribute, please post to the comments of this article and include a citation where the version number can be validated.

Why create a list like this? Because I have needed it numerous times in the past and frankly I'm sick of having wade through my stack of books or the incredibly hard-to-find-things Microsoft knowledge base. Maybe it will help someone else, but it will now be easy for me to find from anywhere.

Be sure to check Spencer Harbar's killer Post SP1 page with links to all the hotfixes and version numbers... more than I have here.

* SRP = Security Rollup Package
** - SharePoint v3's architecture is such that MOSS is treated more or less like a feature pack, thus the underlying versions are the same between WSS v3 & MOSS 2007

[Updated 12/15/2005] Added WSS & SPS post-SP2 rollup updates.
[Updated 5/22/2006] Added SQL 2005 SP1 & post SP1 hotfix KB918222
[Updated 5/26/2006] Fixed CMS 2001 SRP1 & SRP2 & SP2 (there was no SP2 for CMS 2001, rather two SRP's for SP1). Thanks to Stefan for pointing this out.
[Updated 12/13/2008] Added all the major updates and security rollups for SharePoint v3.

Gravatar I know the feeling. Every time I need to answer a question on versions for WSS or SPS 2003 I just search the WSS FAQ site with "WSS migration" which I know gives me the right item.

That reminds me, I might have to update that item with the post-SP2 rollup version numbers you list ...

Gravatar P.S. Are you sure about this 11.0.8000.0 for the WSS SP2 rollup ? Shouldn't it be a 6.0 etc. number like all the others ?

The 6.0 numbers come from Site Settings. There have always been an equivalent (but different!) set of 11.0 numbers for WSS if accessed via "Control Panel and then Add and Remove Programs; select WSS and then "click here for support information" " (source http://www.asaris.de/sites/walsh/Lists/WSS%20FAQ/EditForm.aspx?ID=71)

Gravatar Mike- All the version numbers are coming from the file versions listed in the MSKB articles, like this one for WSS SP2: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887624. I elected to use these numbers because that's how MSFT is listed it on their support site. Think it would be helpful to list the numbers shown in Site Settings as well? I thought adding those would cause confusion.

Gravatar Any idea what WSS version 6.02.8117 is? I'm trying to do a database restore and I'm getting the "Portal creation failed Microsoft.SharePoint.SPException: The database schema is too old to perform this operation". Checking the versions for WSS and SPS on the source and target systems, the only difference is that WSS on the source is 6.02.6568 and the target is 6.02.8117. Looking in the install log, I don't see that any hotfixes have been installed. Any ideas?
