Real World SharePoint 2007: Indispensable Experiences From 16 MOSS and WSS MVPs
|
Published: August 2007
Publisher: WROX
ISBN: 0470168358
Book URL: http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/WroxTitle/productCd-0470168358.html
What's so different about this book is that we pulled together 16 SharePoint MVPs which different disciplines to each write a chapter on their particular specialty or area of focus within the product. In addition, this isn't your typical company line or how-to book... this is practical guidance from our experiences in developing and implementing the product in real world situations for real customers.
I contributed one chapter to this book (like the other authors) on building MOSS 2007 Publishing (WCM) sites in a more structured way using Features and solutions, similar to what I briefly cover in this post.

Developer's Guide to the Windows SharePoint Services v3 Platform
|
Published: December 2006
Publisher: Charles River Media
ISBN: 1584505001
Book URL: http://www.charlesriver.com/Books/BookDetail.aspx?productID=149744
The Developer's Guide to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 teaches developers how to build solutions that leverage the Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS v3) platform. Many developers are not yet familiar with this platform and its capabilities, so the first few chapters focus on the out-of-the-box experience and how to secure solutions built on top of it. From there, the book explores some of the key aspects of the WSS v3 platform and how to leverage them for building applications. Throughout the book, practical programming solutions using real-world examples are used to illustrate the possibilities of SharePoint and to teach developers how to build their own applications. Some application components covered include Features, Site Definitions, Web Services, Web Parts, Events, and Workflows. The book also teaches how to migrate from 2.0 to 3.0 and to work with the object model and built-in WSS Web Services in various settings. Developers who want to usurp the fundamental capabilities of WSS v3 rather than building those facilities themselves will find everything they need. The book doesn't attempt to cover the capabilities of Microsoft Office Server System 2007 (MOSS), but MOSS is based entirely on WSS v3 so all the examples found in this book can also be used in that environment too. In fact, everything covered in this book equally applies to WSS v3 and MOSS. While this book attempts to bring developers from the ground up, any Web-based .NET programming experience will prove helpful in understanding the concepts presented within. The C# language is used exclusively in the text but there are comparable VB.NET code listings on the CD-ROM.
I contributed two chapters to this book, one on Web Part fundamentals and another on advanced Web Part techniques.

Advanced Microsoft Content Management Server Development
|
Published: August 2005
Publisher: Packt Publishing
ISBN: 1904811531
Book URL: http://www.packtpub.com/more-mcms/book
Microsoft Content Management Server 2002 is a dynamic web publishing system with which you can build websites quickly and cost-efficiently. MCMS provides the administration, authoring, and data management functionality, and you provide the website interface, logic, and workflow. Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server (SPS) also features in the book. SPS 2003 enables enterprises to deploy an intelligent portal that seamlessly connects users, teams, and knowledge so that people can take advantage of relevant information across business processes to help them work more efficiently.
You've mastered the basics of MCMS, and setup your own MCMS installation. You've only scratched the surface. This book is your gateway to squeezing every penny from your investment in MCMS and SPS, and making these two applications work together to provide an outstanding richness of content delivery and easy maintainability.
As a developer, the Publishing API (PAPI) is at the heart of your work with MCMS, and this book starts by taking you on the most detailed tour of the PAPI you will find anywhere. As a live example, a component that reveals the structure of your MCMS site is created, taking you through how to manage the common elements of MCMS programmatically.
Getting SharePoint and MCMS to work together is the next stop in the book. You will see how to use SharePoint's search engine to search MCMS content, publish content between the two systems, and create SharePoint Web Parts to draw content from MCMS.
To ease your everyday work with MCMS, there are chapters on placeholder validation, and some useful custom placeholders for common MCMS tasks, such as a date-time picker, a placeholder for multiple attachments, and a DataGrid placeholder among others.
There are a number of ways to consume MCMS content from the outside world, and we look at two exciting ways here; RSS and InfoPath/Web Services. The InfoPath solution provides another interface to MCMS content that allows content authors to concentrate on content and not the presentation.
I authored 33% of this book, specifically the chapters dealing with integration between MCMS 2002 & SharePoint Portal Server 2003 as well as creating a custom administration application and configuring MCMS 2002 & SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to run on the same server and IIS Web site.
