Sony backs off the rootkit

Interesting how markets can cause such a backlash.  Sony started installing rootkits on PC’s when you insertted one of the rootkit enabled CD’s.  The rootkit keeps you from copying the CD/DVD.  Then, Mark Russinovich posted an article that made the world aware.  Sony then confirmed 100% of it’s CD’s and DVD’s would have the rootkit on them.  Retailers got pissed… everyone got pissed… even Microsoft‘s AntiSpyware tool (in beta) started removing the rootkit.

Well… public backlash forced Sony to back offMark is quite happy (as are the rest of us). Wonder how much that cost them?
